Many of our friends and family members have had the gut-wrenching experience of having their lives interrupted, damaged or even ended by collisions with our beloved wildlife. This has probably happened to you or someone you know.
Yet when we ask around, “everyone knows” (and how many false statements begin with those words) that there is “nothing anyone can do about it.”
Hogwash! In our local police department, there are officers who have 4 collisions with deer every year, and other officers who go for 20 years without one. Anyone can see that there has to be a difference in how they drive.
My own daughter, taught by contemporary driver’s ed, totaled 2 vehicles in just a couple of years and narrowly missed dying as a result. So I decided that I had to take matters into my own hands to teach her how to drive safely and help her protect the wildlife she loves. In the process, I found other drivers who wanted to learn. So I’ve embarked on what I believe to be an important mission.
I have friends who have plowed their big rigs into a dozen deer, while I’ve driven over a million miles on roads teaming with wildlife with only a single accident.
And I’m not unique – there are many people who have discovered important secrets on how to stay safe and keep our wildlife safe. But unless you know them personally, how would you learn what they know?
This site is the answer. You’ve arrived at a site where we care a lot about people and wildlife. I challenge you to read through the list of tips and see if some of them don’t ring true to you. Many people who have done so are not only driving more safely, they’re enjoying the trip instead of having every venture onto the roads be a nerve-wracking, white knuckle experience.
Nobody knows for sure, but everyone agrees it really is a BIG problem.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that about 275,000 motor vehicle crashes involving an animal occurred in 2005.
The National Safety Council states that in 2007 there were 530,000 animal-related accidents in the United States resulting 10,000 injuries and 200 deaths.
The Insurance Institue for Highway Safety reports that there are more than 1.5 million crashes annually in the U.S. involving deer alone, costing an estimated $1.1 billion in vehicle damage.
According to the Insurance Information Institute, the average cost for vehicular damage in wildlife-vehicle collisions is $2,000 per incident, totalling a whopping $3 billion annually in the U.S.! When they factor in bodily injury, they estimate the cost could escalate to $15 billion annually.
The first step is to realize that something CAN be done about it. It’s not just fate when one person dies in a crash and another drives the same road for 20 years without an incident.
